Currently there are no changes to the IMAT, only the Italian language entry exam. They have less general knowledge questions this year, so general knowledge is not cancelled for them. For the IMAT it is most likely going to be that there will either be no change as compared to last year or there will just be less general knowledge than last year.
So for now just assume there is no change for the IMAT and study for general knowledge as you otherwise would.

Regarding the Italian medical exam (NOT the IMAT) they have stated “Le domande di cultura generale saranno ridimensionate da oltre il 30% dell’attuale test al 15%: spesso i candidati si sono trovati a rispondere a quiz letteralmente impossibili e che nulla avevano a che vedere con le materie del corso di studi universitario.”
Translation: “General knowledge questions will be reduced from over 30% of the current test to 15%: candidates often found themselves answering quizzes that were literally impossible and had nothing to do with the subjects of the university course of study.”
So for the IMAT the most logical outcomes are
1. nothing changes, 12 general knowledge questions as usual
2. the same change as in the Italian test: 6 general knowledge questions
3. a similar but non identical change: less than 12 general knowledge questions

If you just want to get into any university and don’t care which one pick one that is from the south of Italy, they are easier to get in to. Which one will be the easiest is not something you can be certain of since this can change based on demand, but bari and messina are usually quite easy relative to the others. I’ve linked an article that includes last years test scores for all universities, and some information on how to best choose a university.
Regarding registration you can register and apply to all of them, you but when it comes time to book the exam on universitaly you will only be considered for the university you picked as your first choice, since you are non EU.

It sounds to me that you need to learn the content before trying questions. Doing a few BMAT questions can be helpful before you have learned all the content, but it should not be your main method of content learning.
My advice is to start learning biology and chemistry, Ari has a free course is very good for learning the content, you can also use his study planner from 2021 or 2020 and the textbooks he recommends for these subjects (these are just the recommended textbooks however, you can use others, ideally cambridge since cambridge is the one that writes the exam). If you run into trouble understanding a certain topic, use youtube and you will find a video explaining it.
Knowing the content itself is not enough in my opinion, as the IMAT has a special way of asking questions and it helps to know how the question works and any methods you can learn to apply to these questions, this saves you a lot of time and you will be able to memorise certain ways to solve specific question types that the IMAT asks. There are courses that teach you methods to solve certain IMAT style questions, which is a great way to boost marks and to know what kind of things to focus on. I personally use IMAT Buddy for this and found it to be very helpful (this is just my personal opinion however).
Also make sure you are studying correctly. Just making notes is not enough, you should use anki so that you can remember everything you learn. Finally you should also start doing BMAT questions, they are not always identical to the IMAT but they are similar (this you already know I think since you are practicing). After this attempt IMAT papers (try save a few for a date closer to the exam so you can practice close to the exam).
Overall, do not stress too much, you have 6 months left and if you do these things you will be fine.

You dont need to waste money buying all the books. I would focus on using the books in Ari’s study planner, you can find these for free anyway (message me if you dont know where to find them). Then maybe also use the free course here on entermedschool, theres also some other good courses online. Then also just Youtube is helpful
