PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY: Katia has worked in education and public health her entire career and enjoys both being a teacher as well as a student. She spent the beginning of her health career training village health educators in Tanzania in the 1980s. As a project manager, she was responsible for the education and advanced training of over 75 health educators.
As a midwife, she has trained numerous student midwives since 1991 through her homebirth practice and as an instructor at Maternidad La Luz, a birth center and midwifery school on the US/Mexico border. Since Fall 2015, she has been teaching classes twice a week attended by local women from Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. These women are being trained as midwives (2–year didactic program followed by a clinical program), doulas (126+ hour course), breastfeeding (6 week course) and childbirth educators (6 week course). The classes are taught at the local birth center, Casa Geburt, which is run and operated by Katia and local senior midwives and apprentices. In October 2017, she was instrumental in the opening of Centro de Angelitos, a free–standing birth room run by midwives and doulas within Hospital Angeles. No hospital personnel are involved in the birth unless transfer of care is necessary. A truly revolutionary concept in the region. In January of 2020 a cohort started online with students from Canada, USA and Mexico before Covid was motivating online classes.
Since 2014, Katia has actively worked with Herbal Medics Academy teaching workshops and online webinar courses Emergency Childbirth, Women and Herbs, Childbirth Herbs and Pediatric Herbalism. She is also the main instructor for the EarthWise Doula Program, training women as Doulas to work in austere, low resource settings and disaster relief. She also is the owner and Clinical Herbalist for Casa Geburt Herb Clinic.
Currently, Katia is preparing as a Trainer of Trainers in the American Academy of Pediatrics “Helping Babies Survive” series and the Jhpiego “Helping Mothers Survive” and the International MotherBaby Childbirth Initiative (IMBCI) 10 steps to Optimal MotherBaby Maternity Services which have all been tested and proven to improve birth outcomes. |
